The roof is one of the important features of any building. It protects the building from the elements and helps to regulate temperature. All roof systems come with warranties and are meant to be maintained and repaired accordingly. But one aspect that a lot of people don’t bother about is the maintenance and repair of their roofs. In fact, they assume that their roofs have no need for repair as their structure is good enough.

Asphalt shingles are an overwhelming majority of the U.S. asphalt roofing market and are usually reinforced by fibre or synthetic materials. Asphalt roofing has a very long life span, which can go for many decades. However, since asphalt shingle roofs tend to expand and contract during high and low weather, they must be repaired on a regular basis. Also, when they get dirty or mouldy, they can be removed and replaced with new ones. Also, since asphalt shingles are made up of two layers of asphalt slabs, if one layer of slabs is badly worn, it can also cause damages to the other layer, causing damage to the whole roof. Another aspect that makes asphalt shingle roofs suitable for residential buildings is the fact that they can resist fire. The fire resistance of asphalt roofing materials includes Class A, B and C, and the fire resistance of any material is classified by these classes.

However, not all residential buildings require asphalt shingle roofs. Some structures such as homes with a gable roof are better suited for wood shake roofing. Wood shake roofing is also made up of two layers of slabs that are separated by a distance of about 8 inches. These slabs are joined together using metal ties. Though wood shakes offer a higher degree of roof durability and provide more energy-efficient roof design compared to asphalt shingles, they also tend to be prone to mildew growth. Moreover, wood shakes require frequent repairs as well.
